Very little is known about this tomb we label ’the Tomb of the Centurion’ at Capernaum. The tomb itself has all the features of classic early-mid Roman-style tomb (1st-4th century CE). The tomb is located between the Capernaum National Park and the Church of the Twelve Apostles at Capernaum. In 1866, C.W. Wilson records that he discovered two monumental tombs near here, and this tomb is likely one of them. Local religious Jews often gather here for prayer and you may still see the candles burning. They believe that the tomb belonged to the actual prophet Nahum. The tomb houses a family of bats throughout the day, so try not to use a flash on your camera. Bring a flashlight! Note that the top of the tomb sticks out above the ground surface and is surrounded by a tree. In picture: Dr. James Charlesworth, Princeton Theological Seminary
