The Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center, New York City is one of the most famous Christmas trees in the world. An estimated 125 million people visit the tree each year. The tree is lit every year on the Wednesday evening following Thanksgiving in a public ceremony that is broadcast live on NBC. The tradition started unofficially in 1931, when workers building the Rockefeller Center erected and decorated a 20 foot (6.1 m) Christmas tree at the center. 2 years later, the Rockefeller Center dubbed it an official yearly tradition and erected and lit a 50-foot-tall (15 m) tree.
