The airship Hindenburg, the largest zeppelin ever built, and the pride of Nazi Germany, bursts into flames upon touching its mooring tower in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 passengers and crew-members, on May 6, 1937, at 7:25 p.m. local time. This famous disaster took place at Lakehurst Naval Air Station (known today as Lakehurst Maxfield Field) located approximately 25 miles (40 km) east-southeast of Trenton in Manchester Township and Jackson Township in Ocean County, New Jersey. Many theories have been put forward as to why the airship Hindenburg exploded on that day, including hypotheses attributing the initial fire to static spark, engine failure, lightening and even deliberate sabotage.
